Linked Sites

The Astrobrowse, Simbad and SDSS links lead to pages that are somewhat complex. The SDSS page has help available and it is useful. I suggest that you visit the SDSS home page as it is a very large survey that is already a highly significant source of data.

The Astrobrowse page looks like it is hung up when it first appears. Wait about 5 seconds and then press the "Update Status" button as shown below. You will get a list of green smiley faces in the left side frame. Each of these links is a link to some form of information. Try them to find out what they do. In this case the search was done on Lambda Andromeda, a star in the bright double star catalog. The page displayed in the right frame came from the bibliographic reference smiley face.

The Simbad link (DEC cell) produces a list of objects near the chosen object. In this case the object is the Cheeseburger Nebula from Burnham's Celestial Handbook Volume 2.

If you press the plot button, Simbad will produce a nice chart. You can click on objects in the chart to find out what they are.

If you select one of the items in the list you get specific information about the object

Notice the two tools labelled Aladin on the lower right. The previewer brings up a DSS image. The Java applet displays the same image, but with an interactive overlay that marks the objects that are in the Simbad database. You can click on these marked objects to find out what they are. Extremely cool. I selected the objects marked with green boxes by dragging the mouse over them with the left button down. The data at the bottom of the page are the Simbad entries for the selected items.
